Joseph "Joe" Granteed, Sr.

Joseph “Joe” Granteed, Sr., 83, of North Syracuse, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025. Born on August 10, 1941, in Syracuse, NY, Joe was the beloved son of Michael and Lucille (DeGelorm) Granteed. Joe grew up on Richfield Boulevard in Mattydale and later built a home filled with love on Rita Drive, where he and his wife, Marianne, created a lifetime of memories over their 62 years of marriage. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; the true patriarch of his large Italian family. Joe proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963 and continued his service in the Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Specialist 4th Class. After his military service, he worked a significant portion of his life at New Process Gear before retiring. He was a die-hard Yankees fan, who found joy in the simple things: watching ball games with his son Joe, teaching his daughter Maura how to take care of a home, from how to use a snowblower to maintaining the car so it would last longer; he was well known for keeping everything immaculate and clean, where he gained his nickname “Mr. Clean”. He relied on his daughter Michelle as his caretaker, always calling to notify her what needed to be fixed and how he was feeling, but also making sure she was taking care of herself. But what we all will miss hearing the most is how he affectionately called out to his patient and compassionate wife is, “Mare!” for over six decades. His devotion and unwavering dedication to her was an example of his unconditional love. His greatest happiness, however, came from his grandchildren. He was known for his generosity, slipping his grandchildren $1 and $5 bills, handing out his gas card, and expressing his love by tugging on their ear. His way of showing he would always be with them. Joe was passionate about coaching his children in sports, teaching them the values of hard work, commitment, and loyalty. His wisdom and guidance extended beyond the field, shaping their careers and lives. His legacy of perseverance and love will live on in the generations he leaves behind. Joe was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Michael and Lucille Granteed and sister, Dolly and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marianne (Sciancalepre) Granteed; his children: Joseph Granteed, Jr., Michelle (Ronald) DeTota, and Maura Secor; his grandchildren: Megan (John) Rooney, Kelly (Mark) Syron, Nicole Granteed, Mari and Veronica DeTota, and Matthew and Isabella Secor; and his great-grandchildren: Eleanor and Jack Rooney and Martin Syron. Joe is also survived by his brother, Michael Granteed, Jr., as well as his sisters-in-law, Ginger Granteed, Maureen Quirk and brother-in-law, Bob Quirk, as well as his best friends, Midge and Roy Hughes and dear neighbors of Rita Drive. He also leaves behind his cherished godchildren, Ronald Suatoni and Deanna Schlueter, in addition to nieces and nephews, Adrienne Maret, Kristen Suatoni and Michael Suatoni. Joe’s unwavering love and dedication to his family will be forever remembered. His legacy of selflessness, hard work, and devotion will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. A funeral service in celebration of Joseph’s life will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, March 3, 2025, at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME. Entombment with Military Honors will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends may call from 1:00 – 4:00 pm on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR.
