My thoughts are with each of you as you move through this difficult time. I only knew Joe for a small fraction of his many years, but I will forever be grateful for that time and experience. Joe's strength, personality, and demeanor put me quickly at ease. He was a man that I trusted to measure each person on their individual merit.
Among my memories of Joe, two stand above the others. The first recalls the sometimes spirited Sunday dinners at Willumae Drive. I find myself smiling whenever I remember Joe always asking me if I needed some red pepper for my sauce. I was always warmed by the feeling of inclusion that his “pepper-pushing” elicited. Another event that I think of often also took place at Willumae Drive. Joe and I were out in the garage working on some changes to a kitchen cabinet. I was trying to fit a piece into the cabinet, and Joe leaned over my shoulder and said, “you work close.” When someone you respect compliments your work, the gesture carries special meaning. Even as the new guy, Joe always had a way of making me feel welcome.
