Joseph A. Maio's Obituary
Joseph A. Maio, 87, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Friday, April 4, 2014.
He was born and raised on the North Side of Syracuse in the shadows of Schiller Park. As a youth, Joe was an active member of the Boy Scouts Troop 81. He was a graduate of North High School class of 1945. After high school he joined the Navy and was assigned to the Destroyer Escort USS Strickland as a Radar and Communications Officer and was a proud WWII veteran. Following the war, Joe graduated from Siena College and lettered in soccer.
Joe joined the Standard Fruit Company as Vice President of Purchasing for the Northeast, based in Manhattan. He later moved back to Syracuse and was employed by the NY State Division of Parole for 25 years until his retirement.
Joe was an active communicant of Holy Cross Church, DeWitt. As a member of the WWII Veterans’ Association, he looked forward to the annual reunion with his shipmates. He was an avid golfer and a founding member of the Eastwood Golf League. Family and friends are still chasing his daunting accomplishment of 4 hole-in-ones. He bowled at the Eastwood Sports Center in various leagues with the Salanger and Hayward team. During the summer, when not golfing, Joe could be found vacationing on Cape Cod with his family or tending his vegetable and flower gardens.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Grace (Mollica) Maio; sister, Ann Maio, and brother, James Maio. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Lillian (Ianuzzi) Maio; son, Joseph Maio of North Bergen, NJ; daughter, Kathy A. Maio of Fayetteville; two sisters, Stephanie Hinds (Jack) of Loudonville and Jeannette Picciotto of Liverpool, along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9:00 am in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME followed by a funeral mass in celebration of Joe's life at 10:00 AM in Holy Cross Church, DeWitt. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt. Family and friends may call at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd.(corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
