Joseph A. Monteleone, Sr.'s Obituary
Joseph A. Monteleone, Sr., 86, of DeWitt, NY, passed away on Friday, August 5, 2016. He was born in Syracuse and graduated from North High School in 1948. Joe then enlisted into the U.S. Air Force 818th Air Division (SAC) and was stationed at Lincoln Air Force Base in Lincoln, NE. He was designated to the 98th Armament-Electronic Maintenance Squadron in the Korean War where he received the Korean Service Medal, United National Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Joe also attended Syracuse University School of Forestry. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a carrier in 1996. In his retirement he worked as a courier for Wilcox Travel and Monroe/Stewart Abstract until age 84. Joe was a big fan of SU Football and Basketball, traveling with his wife to many games as a member of the Pastime Athletic Club. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a long-time member of the Pompey Rod and Gun Club.
He was predeceased by his parents, Carmen and Margaret Monteleone; his son, David Monteleone, and nephew, Joe Carno.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Rae (Fargo) Monteleone; his daughter, Debra Monteleone; his son, Joseph A. (Maria) Monteleone, Jr., two grandchildren, Gina Monteleone and Joseph A. Monteleone III; his sister, Libera Carno, and niece, Dr. Margaret Ann Carno. He is also survived by his step-children, Chris Sangster (Karen), Marybeth Otterbein (Greg), Charles Sangster (Marie), Tom Sangster (Sara), Amy Hughes (John), Ann Gallagher and 13 loving step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 15, 2016 at 9:00 AM in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Funeral Mass in celebration of Joe’s life at 10:00 AM in Holy Cross Church, DeWitt. Burial with Military Honors will follow at the Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Francis House or Holy Cross Church.
