Joseph M. "Sonny" Vassallo Sr.'s Obituary
Joseph M. "Sonny" Vassallo, Sr., 79, of Cicero, passed away Friday, October 25, 2013 after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Syracuse, the son of the late Joseph and Rose (Nuzzo) Vassallo. Joseph worked in the food industry for 50 years between Land O' Lakes and Deli Boy Provisions. He was a member of the IAAC and served for a time as the President of the Le Moyne/Lyncourt Dolphins Junior Football Organization. He was a skilled self taught craftsman who was always willing to take on any project large or small. Joseph was very proud of his Italian heritage and conveyed this throughout his life to his family. Joseph's true passion was spending time with his family, especially Sunday dinners prepared by Anita.
Joseph is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Anita M. (DiBello) Vassallo; three sons, Leo R. (MaryBeth) Vassalo of Onondaga Hill; Ronald J. (Jacklyn) Vassallo of Liverpool and Joseph M. (Lauren) Vassallo, Jr. of Liverpool; seven grandchildren, Leigh, Jason, Tori, Juliana, Mia, Gianna and Joseph III.; his brother, Donald (Theresa) Vassallo of Lyncourt; his sister, Shirley (Joseph) Scripa of Syracuse along with several nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday at 9:00 AM in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME and 10:00 AM in St. John the Baptist Church, where a funeral mass will be celebrated. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends may call at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (Corner of Buckley Rd.), North Syracuse on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
