Joseph William Verzino's Obituary
Joseph William Verzino (“Uncle Jay”), native and long-time resident of Syracuse, NY passed away in Myrtle Beach, SC on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 from a short illness with his family by his side. He was born the third of three sons to the late Joseph and Albina Verzino on December 8, 1932, in Syracuse NY.
A graduate of Syracuse University College of Engineering, Joe’s creative spirit and entrepreneurism was never ending. Shortly after graduation, he worked for the US Army in Germany testing and perfecting helicopter radar systems. Upon returning, Joe began his long career as a computer software engineer at Syracuse Research Corporation where he worked for over 20 years, then became a trusted consultant in Engineering for General Electric.
Most importantly, Joe dedicated his life to his family. He blessed them with his love and lessons of grace and resilience in difficult times. Joe’s optimism was contagious and assuring. We will always remember his magnetic smile, witty banter and genuine compassion and empathy for all he met.
He is predeceased by his loving wife of 27 years and mother of his six children, Geraldine Verzino and his son and namesake, Joseph W. Verzino, who both passed in January of 1986. He is also predeceased by his brother, Anthony Verzino.
He is survived by his older brother, Frank Verzino; daughters, Alissa Verzino-Mearon (David Mearon) and Mary Lou Verzino-Wason; sons, John Verzino (LynnMarie Smyth-Verzino), Jerold Verzino (Patricia Davies-Verzino), James Verzino; grandsons, Robert Falasco, Alexander Verzino, Russell Verzino, and Robert Wason; granddaughters, Regina Verzino, Alyssa Verzino and Geraldine Wason. He is also survived by his wife Celia.
Friends and family may call at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY on Thursday, February 8th between the hours of 5 pm to 7 pm. A Funeral Mass in celebration of Joseph’s life will be conducted at St. John the Baptist Church on Friday, February 9th at 10:00 am with entombment to follow at St. Mary’s Mausoleum, DeWitt, NY.
