Josephine (Joanne) A. Cencia's Obituary
Josephine (Joanne) A. Cencia, 76, of Syracuse, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday with her loving family by her side. Born in Syracuse on October 27, 1935, daughter of the late Richard and Sarah (Amato) Fazio. As a lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, she graduated from North High School in 1953. Joanne recently retired from the US Census Bureau after 40 years of service as a Senior Field Representative. She was a member of the Moose and Elks clubs as well as the Orange Pack. Joanne passionately followed SU football and basketball. She was also a former avid bowler and golfer with a hole-in-one that she was very proud of. Joanne always enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and family at her home in Florida and looked forward to the many vacations with her daughter and son-in-law. She loved her weekly card games with her girlfriends. Joanne will be remembered for her fun loving energetic spirit and someone who lived life to its fullest. She will always be our courageous and fearless strong warrior with a beautiful heart of gold; our love for you is everlasting. She was predeceased by her husband, Berney in 2005. Joanne is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Gregory) Cencia-Sullivan; sister, Patti (James) Arena; niece, Lauri (Mark) Gildemeyer; nephews, Mark (Brenda) Arena and Jimmy Arena, all of Syracuse and several aunts and cousins. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 am Monday in Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will greet friends in Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church from 10 to 11:30 am Monday. The family graciously asks that no flowers be sent, contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House.
