Jovan Gorgievski's Obituary
Jovan Gorgievski, 85, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 12, 2018.
Jovan was born on April 27, 1933 in Velusina in the former Yugoslavia. His military duty included service as a personal guard to that country's president. He immigrated to Syracuse in 1962 and settled in nearby Liverpool a decade later. In 1965, he was among the founding congregation of St. George Macedonian Orthodox Church in Syracuse, which would be the spiritual and communal center of his life for his remaining years, especially as opportunities to lead traditional Macedonian line dances presented themselves. He retired in 1997 after a long career at the General Electric and G.A. Braun companies.
While staunchly proud of his Macedonian heritage, Jovan was not reserved about embracing his adopted country, often finishing his day with two simple words: "Beautiful America."
He was predeceased by three brothers, Riste, Veljan, and Alexander. Jovan is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Trena (Rendevski); a daughter, Lillie; a son, Nicholas (Liane), and granddaughters, Mary Rose Branch and Simone Gorgievski; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Monday, December 17, 2018 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY. A celebration of Jovan’s life will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at St. George Macedonian Orthodox Church, 5083 Onondaga Rd., Syracuse, with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Syracuse.
