Louis "Lou" Alteri's Obituary
Louis “Lou” Alteri, 88, of North Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 13, 2014 at the Francis House. He was born on January 13, 1926 in Syracuse, NY to the late Frank and Eugenia (Calvarese) Alteri. Lou retired from General Electric in 1986 after 38 years of service, where he chaired the GE United Fund for 10 years. Among his other achievements were 25 years of service to the Village of North Syracuse. He also served 4 years on the North Syracuse School District Board where he was president for 2 years. Among Lou’s many passions was anything to do with food. He grew it, cooked it, broiled it, froze it, canned it picked it (he loved picking strawberries and blueberries) and made his own pasta. His pasta was the best and there was always an endless supply packed in paper grocery bags stored in the basement. Lou would always ask, “What do you want, thick (fettuccine or thin (spaghetti)?? He was very generous with anything he made including his homemade sausage, strawberry jam and applesauce. He also made a great Eggplant Parmesan which was one of his son Lou’s favorite dishes. Another one of Lou’s passions were his grandchildren. Jason, Joe, Garrett, Jennifer, and Avery were very special to him. He had great relationships with all his grandchildren and was always there if they needed a ride to someplace or a special favor. Among the highlights in later years was lunch with grandson, Garrett, dining on Veal Scaloppini at Rico’s Restaurant in East Syracuse.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of CNY and Francis House. They provided care for Lou and the family at a time when they were sorely needed. Their efforts during Lou’s final days are not to be understated. Thanks to them.
He was predeceased by his 3 brothers, Joseph, Anthony and Michael Alteri, and his sister, Mary Tucci. Lou is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Doris (Talladay) Alteri; his 3 children, Pamela (Wayne) Hoffman; Louis (Barbara) Alteri and Jacqueline (Robert) Clarke; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; his sister, Fanny Lumia; his brother, Frank Alteri, along with many nieces and nephews.
