Louis J. DeFuria Sr.'s Obituary
Louis J. De Furia, Sr. passed away on Friday, December 31st. Louis was a graduate of Syracuse's Central High School where he played varsity football and was Senior Class Treasurer. He continued his education at Syracuse University where he graduated from the College of Forestry. He received his pilot's license in 1941 from SU's Ground School. During World War II he worked at Glen Martin Co., a manufacturer of warplanes which was located in Baltimore, MD. It was in Baltimore where he met and married his wife of 66 years, Helen. When the couple returned to Syracuse, Louis and his brother Edward, opened and operated East Syracuse Appliance, a position he held for over 40 years. He stayed an additional two years mentoring his grand-niece, Rae, on the nature and needs of the business. Even in his 90's, "Uncle Lou" was everybody's "Mr. Fix-It". He was our plumber, electrician and small appliance mechanic. He was an avid reader and loved his sports and pets above all. Louis was pre-deceased by his wife, Helen Barley De Furia; his son, Louis J. De Furia, Jr., daughter-in-law, Paulette De Furia, step-granddaughter, Michelle Hirsch, brothers and sisters-in-law, James H. (Florence) De Furia, Edward L. (Durelle) De Furia, Dr. Charles V. (Betty) De Furia and Dr. Albert C. De Furia, sisters and brothers-in-law: Frances M. (Marino) Barilli, Marguerite M. De Furia, Mary C. (William) Dudznyski, nephews, James H. De Furia, III, and Albert E. De Furia. Surviving are step-grandchildren, Denise (Craig) Hoffman and Wayne Hirsch, sisters-in-law, Therese (Dr. Albert C.) De Furia, Janet Rooney and Evelyn (William) Richardson; nephews, Jeffrey P. (Suzanne), Jay, Charles V. II (Martha) and Dr. Edward L. (Mary Gay) De Furia; nieces, Linda Doscher, Giannina De Furia, M. Dianne (Gino) Le Naz, Dr. Margaret L. and Mary Elizabeth De Furia and numerous great and great-great nieces, nephews and several cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 AM Tuesday in the Thomas J. Pirro Funeral Home and at 10:30 AM in Blessed Sacrament Church where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Entombment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt. Family and friends may call at the THOMAS J. PIRRO FUNERAL HOME on Monday from 4 to 7 PM. Louis's family would like to express a special "Thank You" to Hospice of CNY and the "special care" given by his various health care aides. Contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
