Lucy A. Scarminach 's Obituary
Lucy A. (Egnoto) Scarminach, age 92, passed away on Friday at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her loving family. Lucy was born on September 3, 1918 to Orazio and Antoinette Egnoto. She lived her entire life on the North Side of Syracuse in the Italian American neighborhood she was born in and close to the relatives and friends she loved so much. Lucy was a person of spirit, determination with a positive influence over all who knew her. Most of all, she was the matriarchal leader of an extended family. She was the last survivor of Italian immigrants who came here at the turn of the century, became American citizens, loved their country, sent their sons to defend it in war and educated their children to live the American dream. Lucy was a long time employee of St. Joseph's Hospital where her friendly face and demeanor was appreciated by physicians, interns, nurses and other staff members who visited her dining room. She was particularly known for her kindness to student nurses and interns. She was a passionate parent who with her husband, John, encouraged their children and many grandchildren to pursue educational excellence and work hard. She also took pride in their sports and other extracurricular achievements. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Scarminach, her son, Orrie Scarminach, granddaughter, Jessica Flegal, niece, Maria DeRosa and nephew, Al DeRosa, Lucy Scarminach was also the last survivor of 7 children; brothers, Joseph, Frank, Sam, Anthony and Tom Egnoto and sister, Carmella Millacci. She is survived by her son, Charles Scarminach of Hilton Head Island, SC; daughter, Antoinette (Gary) Flegal and son-in-law, Richard "Rick" Gary (Flegal); grandchildren, John and Alexis Scarminach of Atlanta, GA, Catherine Scarminach of Nashville, TN, Karen Scarminach of NYC, Chuck and Robert Scarminach of Hilton Head Island, SC and Brett Carguello of Cazenovia, NY; also many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday at 9:30 AM in the Thomas J. Pirro Funeral Home and 10:30 AM in Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the THOMAS J. PIRRO FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd., North Syracuse, NY on Tuesday from 4 to 7 PM. Contributions may be made to the Jessica R. Flegal Memorial Fund at Upstate Foundation at University Hospital in Syracuse, NY or Hilton Head Preparatory School on Hilton Head Island, SC or to Hospice of CNY.
