Marion L. Monto's Obituary
Marion L. Monto, 97, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Thursday. She was born in Syracuse and in 1943 became the first woman to join the U.S. Army Woman's Auxiliary Corps. of Syracuse serving during WWII. After the war, she was honorably discharged as a Sergeant from the military and went back to Washington to work for the U.S. Navy Department, becoming one of their administrators. Marion then worked for the U.S. Embassy in Rome, Italy and then went back to Washington D.C. to work as an administrator for NASA. She was a world traveler and traveled to 52 countries throughout her life.
She was predeceased by her parents, Theodore and Josephine (Rocca) Monto; her sister, Mary Barber; her brothers, James, Joseph, Frank and Ernest Monto and many nieces and nephews. Marion is survived by her nephew, Michael A. Barber of Liverpool; her great-niece, MaryAnn (Franklyn) Grower of North Syracuse; sister-in-law, Irene Monto and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral mass in celebration of Marion's life will be held on Thursday at 9:30 am in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church. Private burial will be in Assumption Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marion's honor may be made to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church, 259 East Onondaga Street, Syracuse, NY 13202.
