Mary came to the United States in 1948; she and her husband lived on Magnolia Street in Syracuse until they were able to build their first home on the North Side where they raised their family. Mary held various jobs including a seamstress at Learbury’s and Edwards, a sewing teacher at the Boys and Girls Club of America and was most proud of her time cooking for the Franciscan Sisters and Brothers serving St. Joseph’s Hospital. She adored her Aunt Mary and Uncle Domenic Maduro from Hazelton, Pennsylvania. They were her support when she arrived in this country. Aunt Mary helped with the transition to life in the United States, teaching her basic skills like how to cook with gas versus an open fire. The two shared a special bond, a common love of all things family and a position of grand matriarch - looked to for guidance, inspiration and strength.
In her retirement, Mary spent most of her time in the garden or the kitchen with her family where many of her family traditions and lesson were passed on. She took great pride in working the land the way her parents taught her and always made sure anyone entering her home did not leave hungry.
Nana Mary had an unbelievable memory. She often told stories of going to school at the convent in Satriano, raising silk worms, learning to harvest olives and grapes on her family farm, and experiencing World War II as a child. Those who love Mary will remember her strength, kindness, faith and the hours spent together around her kitchen table.
