Matthew Leonard Charles' Obituary
Matthew Leonard Charles, 98, of Fayetteville, passed away Friday at Chittenango Center. He was born in Syracuse, the son of the late Juliano and Incornatta (DelVecchio) Charles. Matthew was the owner and operator of Varsity Sport Shop. He was a former communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church and a current member of Immaculate Conception Church, Fayetteville. Matthew was also a member of Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club, Nottingham Knowles Country Club, Old Boys, Blind Men and Criers and Kiwanis Club. Matthew introduced little league to the city of Syracuse and was a NYS football and basketball official and baseball umpire.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Anne Charles- Dean; five brothers and one sister. Matthew is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Harriet (Sitnik) Charles; his son, Matthew (Geraldine) Charles; his daughter, Marsha (Mike) McCarthy; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am in Immaculate Conception Church, Fayetteville. Entombment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum, Dewitt. Family and friends may call at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
