I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work for Mike Bragman for almost 20 years while he served in the New York State Assembly. Mike used his political skills to help constituents, secure funding and pass laws. He worked hard and it was difficult for us staffers to keep up with him.
My most favorite memories of Mike are when he met with kids in classrooms or when school groups or scout troops visited him in Albany. He would tell them that he was proud to be a politician. He talked about representing Central New York and sitting next to a colleague who could see the Empire State Department from his office window and another colleague who lived near Niagara Falls. He impressed upon them the importance of learning to work together, to listen to others and to compromise. One of his favorite exercises was to explain to the kids how laws were made. He had the kids tell him about their favorite ice cream flavors. Then he told them to pretend that there could only be one flavor in the world. It was their responsibility to pick that flavor and agree to it. The kids found themselves arguing, lobbying and eventually coming to a consensus.
My deepest condolences go out to Sue, Michael Jr., Heather and Leslie. I hope they take comfort in knowing the many ways Mike made a positive difference in all our lives.
