Mickey Broome's Obituary
Mickey Broome, 92, of Baldwinsville, NY, went to join his late beloved wife, Marilyn Harriet Broome and the Lord on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Upstate Medical Center, surrounded by his family and nephews.
He was born May 17, 1932, in Euclid, NY to his parents, Viola and John L. Broome. He was a proud lifelong resident of Baldwinsville; his education began in a one room schoolhouse on Smokey Hollow Road. He was part of the last class to graduate from Baldwinsville Academy in 1951 where he was the only person of color.
Mickey was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran after being drafted and serving 18 months as an engine man, spending his service time aboard an LST (Landing Ship, Tank), progressing to the rank of E4 in his time of service.
For his entire adult life, he was a truck driver and mechanic for a total of 72 years, starting with K.E. Fidler Trucking, working with some of his brothers, then various other trucking companies until finally retiring from Mobil Oil Corporation in 1992. After the passing of his wife of 36 years in 1996, he resumed driving, starting part-time with RTC, a U.S. Mail contractor and ending with Van Slyke Trucking in Syracuse in 2017. He liked to say he’d driven well over a million miles behind the wheel, all the while “never having a chargeable accident or moving violation, I’ve probably driven to the moon and back several times.”
He’s preceded in death by his 11 siblings, Frank Broome, Sr., John Broome, Jr., Milton Broome, Nathan Broome, William Broome, Julia “Judy” Broome, Gloria Hudson, Beatrice Broome, Christine Dunlap Harrington, Emily Smith and Joanne Williams.
Mr. Broome leaves to mourn his passing and celebrate his life, three children, Leontyne Broome of Baldwinsville, Sherrlyn Broome of Buffalo, Fredrick Broome of Lansing, and two grandsons, Micah and Nikko Broome, and a plethora of loving family and friends, nieces and nephews.
We’ve heard it said many, many times “Mickey has never met a stranger.”
Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 11 am – 1pm, immediately followed by a funeral service with Military Honors at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd.) corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
