Nicholas Morina's Obituary
Nicholas Morina, 91, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on Saturday, April 25, 2015. Nick was born on March 4, 1924 in Gualtieri Sicaminò, Sicily to Antonio and Nicolina Morina. Nick owned the Eastwood Barber Shop for 64 years and was truly grateful to his devoted customers. He was a proud member of the United States Army 79th Infantry Division 315 Regiment, Cross of Lorraine, serving in World War II. Nick was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church since 1952 where he attended daily mass and was dedicated to the Rosary. Nick enjoyed reading, fishing, swimming, the Yankees, SU sports and golfing, where he achieved a hole in one! His love of the ocean was passed onto his children and grandchildren. He was lovingly known to his grandchildren as “Pappy” and was extremely proud of his family.
Nick was predeceased by his parents; his infant daughter, Mary; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Peter Colosi; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Egidia Stagnitta; sister-in-law, Josephine Filipkowski, and brother-in-law, Alexander Stagnitta.
Nick is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 68 years, Mary (Stagnitta) Morina; his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Victor Villani; his 8 children, Nicolina and Edward Richards of Concord, MA, Gilda and Stuart Syverson of Charlotte, NC, Anthony and Sally Morina of Santa Monica, CA, Francine and James Levato of Stamford, CT, Teresa and James De Witt of Syracuse, NY, Gerard and Lisa Morina of Perkasie, PA, Jo Anne and Timothy Doran of Camden, ME, Bridget and Michael Meyer of Doylestown, PA and his niece, Ann Marie Filipkowski Trinca of Syracuse, NY; 18 grandchildren, Andrea (Daniel) Smith, Nicholas De Witt, Melissa (Jeremy) McNeill-Phillips, Joseph Di Gioia, Monica De Witt, Thomas (Aryn) Richards, Alexandra Di Gioia, Luke De Witt, Kara De Witt, Adam Morina, Ian Doran, Benjamin Morina, Erin Doran, Olivia Meyer, August Meyer, Nicholas Doran, Emily Morina, Jacob Levato and Anthony, Danielle and Michael Trinca, 3 great-grandchildren, Gianna De Witt, Noemi and Ty Smith; his brother-in-law, Joseph Stagnitta and sister-in-law, Barbara Stagnitta, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Nick’s family would like to thank everyone who has helped in his recent care: Hospice of CNY and especially Cindy Whitcomb, Verland Joseph and Janice Jackson.
Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME followed by a Funeral Mass in celebration of Nick’s life at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church. Entombment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, Dewitt. Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.), North Syracuse, NY.
