Nicola "Nick" Mastrogiovanni's Obituary
Nicola “Nick” Mastrogiovanni, 93, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025 at home, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on November 7, 1932, in Guardiaregia, Italy. Nick was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who will be dearly missed.
Nick emigrated to Venezuela in 1952, where he worked as a truck driver on a banana farm, in addition to other odd jobs. He returned to Italy after seven years, and met the love of his life, Angela (Colantone) Mastrogiovanni. They married one month later in June 1962. Nick emigrated to the United States to join his parents and siblings in Syracuse, New York, where he worked to earn enough to bring his wife and infant son to America.
Reunited in Syracuse, Nick and Angela had two more children. Nick worked tirelessly as a painter, handyman, and landscaper to provide for his family. The original “house flipper,” Nick saved up to purchase and repair homes himself. An active member of Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, Nick was a man of profound faith who led prayer groups and took pride in serving as a eucharistic minister, lector, and usher.
The Mastrogiovanni family would like to thank Nick’s palliative care team, who, together with his wife and children, made sure his last moments were as comfortable as possible.
Nick is predeceased by his parents, Francesco and Nicolina Mastrogiovanni, his sister, Rita, his brother, Peter; his brothers-in-law, Scott, Tom and Frank; and his sister-in-law, Catherine.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Angela; his children, Frank (June) Mastrogiovanni, Lena (John) Pizzuto, and Anna (Emio) Antonucci; his grandchildren, Joseph (Abby), Marisa (Max), Giovanni, and Mia; his great-granddaughter, Olive; his siblings, Andrea (Lucia) Mastrogiovanni, Giovanni (Virginia) Mastrogiovanni, Anne Fitzsimmons, and Yolanda Fero; his brother-in-law, Dominic Colantone and his sister-in-law, Jaye Mastro.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, from 4 to 6 P.M. at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Road, (corner of Buckley Rd.) N. Syracuse, NY. A funeral Mass in celebration of Nick’s life will take place at 10 A.M. on Thursday, June 19, 2025 at Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, 301 Ash Street, Syracuse, NY. He will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum.
