Paul J. Weatherup's Obituary
Paul J. Weatherup, 88, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, October 22, 2021. He was born in Syracuse to the late Frank H. and Mildred H. (Parsons) Weatherup. He worked for many years with First Trust & Deposit Co., Key Bank, and Thermopatch Corp. Paul loved to golf and at one point he even obtained a coveted hole-in-one. He was involved with the Jaycees for years and was the Executive Secretary for the NYS Association of Certified Football Officials (NYSACFO) for 50 years. His expertise in refereeing was evident; he was a high school and college referee for 35 years. Paul also worked at the Carrier Dome for 26 years in game operations including game clock for football, 35 second clock for basketball, and clock and scoreboard operations for various other sports. He was also one of the first members of the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) from 1980 – 1983, the secretary treasurer for the Blind Men and Criers for 40 years and the only non-school educator to ever be chairman of the Officials Coordinating Federation (OCF)- a position he held for 40 years. Adding to his merits, Paul was inducted to the NYS Public High School Athletic Association in 2006 and the Urban Sports Hall of Fame of Syracuse, NY in 2019.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Rosemarie A. (Wadanole) Weatherup; his son, Mark P. Weatherup (Tammy Farrell); grandchildren, Caleigh (Shane) Keadle, Mark P. Weatherup, Jr. (Katianna Zaffery), and Shaelyn Weatherup; a great-grandchild, Kinsey Keadle; along with his beloved grand-dog, Penny.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 from 11 am – 2 pm, immediately followed by a funeral service in celebration of Paul's life at 2 pm at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Road (corner of Buckley Road) North Syracuse. He will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Paul’s name may be made to the Urban Sports Hall of Fame of Syracuse, NY.
