Peter John Soler's Obituary
Peter John Soler, age 94, of Syracuse, NY, passed away on November 17, 2019. Born in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Peter and Isabel Soler (de la Mata).
Peter served in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He was one of the survivors of the sinking of the USS Lansdale which was attacked and sunk by German aerial torpedoes in which 49 souls were lost. Peter fought in the European and Pacific theaters of the World War and earned 9 battle stars for his service while protecting freedom and democracy around the world. He was employed with Carrier Corporation as a draftsman. Peter also served on the National Board of Directors with the Navy League and the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps since retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1985 as Master Chief Petty Officer. Revered, adored, loved, and respected by his family, Shipmates and friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Alice (De Rouch); brother, Robert Soler; brother-in- law, Herman Derbort, and nephews, John Derbort and Anthony Martinesi.
Peter is survived by his sister, Mary Derbort; brother, Edward Soler; sister-in-law, Marge Soler; nephews, John Granson, Peter Derbort, Michael Derbort, Edward Soler, Jr., James Soler, and nieces, Judith Davis, Maria Derbort, Michelle Quarles, and Susan Martinesi.
A funeral mass in celebration of Peter’s life will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 8:00 A.M. in St. Joseph’s Church, 5600 W. Genesee St., Camillus, NY 13031. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Family and Friends may call on Friday, December 6, 2019 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY 13212.
