Robert D. Cunningham's Obituary
Robert D. “Rob” Cunningham 73, of Syracuse, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, August 2, 2016. He was best known in Syracuse as 93Q radio’s personality with the rich baritone voice during the 1980s-90s. At the time of his death, he was making life easier for health professionals and their patients as the account manager for a multitude of medical practices.
Born in 1942 in East Orange, NJ, one of two sons of Vincent and Marcia Cunningham, he started his career on early Top-40 radio stations in Reading, Pottstown, and Allentown, PA and Albany, NY. He came to 93Q in Syracuse after rising to radio fame at Rochester mega-station 98PXY.
At 93Q he joined such local legends as George Plavocos, Jim O’Brien, Fran McGrath, Dave Laird, and Bob Brown, who later welcomed Ted Long and Amy Robbins to the team. All through his radio career, he met and kept friends who now remember and miss his friendly ways, generous spirit, and good humor—always.
Rob was predeceased by his parents and his youngest son, Christopher.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Shelia (Ackerman) Cunningham; sons, Michael (Debra) and Douglas (Kimberly); step-children, Bret (Josie), Bart (Amanda), and ShayMarie Sgroi; grandchildren, Chad, Megan, Jacob, and Rebecca Cunningham, Michael and Katelynn Creasey, and Ross and Bella Sgroi; his brother Donald, and his constant feline companions, George and KC, patiently await his return.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 PM on Monday, August 8, 2016 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Road (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY. Private burial will be at a later date.
