Robert "Bob" Fruciano's Obituary
Robert “Bob” Fruciano, 89, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Monday surrounded by his family. He was born in Syracuse, son of the late Charles and Antonette Fruciano. In 1964, he married the love of his life, Renate. His two beautiful daughters both agree that he was the best father and grandfather anyone could have; he was affectionately known by many as “Papa Bob”.
Robert was a four-sport athlete at North High School and was named to the all-city teams in football and baseball. In 2011, he was inducted into the North High School hall of fame for his athletic achievements. Bob carried a .400 batting average in 1947. He was signed to a pro contract with the Boston Braves organization and played with Richmond at age 17 finishing with a .364 batting average. He was the youngest player ever signed by scout Dewey Griggs for the Braves. Bob had a 3-year average of .330 while playing with the Braves. After his career in the minor leagues, he returned to Syracuse and worked in engineering for Carrier Corporation for over 45 years before retiring.
Along with his parents, Robert is predeceased by a grandson, Aaron Gerber and a brother, Chuck Fruciano.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Renate (Schiller) Fruciano; daughters, Linda (Leonard) Gerber, Julie (Mark) Graff; grandsons, David (Benz) Gerber and Michael Gerber; granddaughter, Erica Graff; his sister, Rita (Bill) Poworoznek; along with many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 3 to 5 pm immediately followed by a celebration of Bob’s life at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
