Rosann Meagher-Champ's Obituary
Rosann Meagher-Champ passed quietly at home surrounded by her family on June 4, 2021, after a long, courageous battle with ALS.
Rosann was born October 6, 1946, in Syracuse, New York to John and Angeline (Angelillo) Meagher. A lifelong resident (almost) and lover of all things Syracuse, she attended Central Tech High School and graduated a proud member of the Class of ‘65, with her Practical Nursing license.
After graduation, she was employed by St Joseph’s Hospital where she did her clinicals as a nursing student. She met her husband, Edwin (Eddie) Champ while working at Hill Haven Nursing Home where she was a beloved and respected member of the nursing staff. They married in February 1968 and spent their newlywed years together residing in several smaller upstate towns. They settled in Liverpool, NY and she focused on raising her children, Kathleen, Colleen and John. Once her children were older, Rosann returned to the work force, including serving as a Deputy Village Clerk and working for the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce. In addition, she found time to attend classes at Onondaga Community College, where she studied business and accounting.
Rosann was incredibly active in her community. She found time to volunteer at all her childrens' school activities, while giving back to the area she loved so much. The list of organizations that Rosann shared her time and talents with is great and varied. Some of her favorites were rowing with the Syracuse Chargers, singing with the Liverpool Community Chorus, serving as a board member with Friends of Historic Onondaga Lake and organizing events as the President of the Liverpool is the Place Committee. Many weekends she could be found dressed in period costumes and acting as an interpretive guide at St. Marie Among the Iroquois. When she had free time – which wasn’t often – she loved to spend it with her family, especially her grandsons, and was known to have a soft spot for animals. If she wasn't antiquing, she loved to work on her expansive gardens and could occasionally be caught singing and dancing in her kitchen.
Rosann is survived by her husband of 53 years, Edwin L. Champ and their children, Kathleen MortonStrauss, Colleen Rienholtz (Scott) and John (Mary) Champ. She also leaves behind her adored grandsons, Ryan and Brennan MortonStrauss and Evan Champ. She will be missed by her sister M. Christine Wheeler-Sumner and her nieces Sarah Reid (Alex), Amy Connell (Pete), and Andrea Wheeler. Rosann also leaves behind her beloved caregiver Kim Johnson, as well as many treasured family members and friends.
Rosann is predeceased by her parents John and Angeline Meagher and her son-in-law Joshua MortonStrauss.
Calling hours will be held at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME 3401 Vickery Road (Corner of Buckley Rd.) N. Syracuse, NY 13212 on Thursday, June 10, 2021, from 5-7 pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am on Friday, June 11, 2021, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church 427 Beechwood Ave, Liverpool. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Association or your favorite animal rescue.
