Salvatore "Sam" Marotta's Obituary
Salvatore (Sam) Marotta, 90, of Syracuse, NY passed away peacefully at the Francis House on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 from cancer.
Sam was born to the late Giuseppe and Angelina Marotta in Syracuse in 1926. He left Solvay High School, like so many others, to enlist in the US Navy to fight for his country in World War II. He was at the battle of Iwo Jima and is one of the few remaining survivors. He continued in the naval reserve during the Korean War.
Sam was married to his loving wife of 67 years, Rose Marie Nami in1948. After Honorable Discharge from the Navy, he then went on to work at General Electric for over thirty years and Rockwell International for over 10 years. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, gardening (especially the square tomatoes!) and puttering around the yard. He was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW in East Syracuse.
He was predeceased by his parents; his siblings, Rose Zagarella and Lillian Pedersen, Joseph, Michael, Philip and Umberto (Bert) Marotta.
Sam is survived by his loving wife, Rose (Nami) Marotta; son, Donald (Judy Walsh); daughter, Katherine Marzec (Michael); grandsons: Jeffrey Marotta, Anthony Marotta (Sharion), Matthew Marotta (Malinda) and Andrew Marzec; great-grandchildren, Anthony Jr., Sophia Rose, Matthew Jr., Mason, and Mary Susan Marotta; his sister, Geraldine Zoanetti, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was extremely proud of his grandsons currently serving or served in the United States Marine Corps: Matthew, Andrew and Anthony.
A funeral service in celebration of Sam’s life will be held at the THOMAS J. PIRRO, JR. FUNERAL HOME on Monday, June 20, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Family and friends may call from Noon to 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd, (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9596, 6996 E. Taft Rd., East Syracuse, NY 13057 or Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse, NY 13208 or a charity of choice.
