Salvatore M. Santangelo's Obituary
Salvatore M. Santangelo (“Uncle Sal”) passed away Thursday, September 29, 2010. Born in Rochester, NY on Easter Sunday, April 4, 1920, he was nicknamed “Vic” by his brothers, because they were promised a victrola for Easter, not a baby brother. At the time of his death he was a resident of Syracuse, NY having moved back in 2003 to live with his daughter after spending several years in Florida.
Sal was a proud veteran of the Second World War, having served in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was primarily stationed in southern England as the head of a mobile repair unit for B17s. He had a spotless memory and recounted detailed stories of his time in the war.
Sal returned to Rochester after his honorable discharge, and raised his family in Rochester and later Syracuse. In 1985 Sal retired from Kodak, where he had worked as a machinist. He spent the next 18 years living in Florida, spending summers with family in Syracuse.
Sal is survived by his daughter, Cookie Falcone of Syracuse; sons, Michael of New Jersey and Gary of Michigan; five grandchildren: Robin (Cooch) Jaquint of Syracuse, Jenna (David) MacLachlan of Syracuse, Christopher (Kim) Falcone of Houston, Michelle Santangelo of Massachusetts and Michael Santangelo of Rochester; nine great-granchildren; Stone Jaquint, Sarah, Jack and Kate MacLachlan, Mia, Sophia and Joey Falcone and Elliott and Zoe Giles; as well as several nieces and nephews and his beloved cockatiel, “Tweety Bird.”
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 8:30 AM in The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Burial will be private at a later date. Family and friends may call at the Thomas J. Pirro Funeral Home on Friday from 4 to 7 PM.
