Serafina "Mary" (Ranieri) Battaglia's Obituary
Serafina “Mary” (Ranieri) Battaglia, 93, of Syracuse, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2019 at the Bishop Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Davoli, Italy to the late Francesco and Francesca (Pitteli) Ranieri and emigrated to the United States in February of 1950. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially when it was for family and friends. Mary was a very generous, giving person and a devout catholic; a seamstress by trade, she worked for over 40 years with Learbury Clothing in Syracuse. She also took joy in traveling to Italy and Florida, but above all, time with family was most important to her and loved to spend time daily with her son, Dominick at Dominick’s Market for many years.
Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Dominick in 1996 and siblings, Giuseppe, Benedetto, Salvatore, Antonio and Francesca “Nina”.
Mary is survived by her children, Vincent “Jim” (Francine) Battaglia, Connie (Frank) Rotella, and Dominick A. (Kathy) Battaglia; 7 grandchildren, James Battaglia, Robert (Lisa) Battaglia, Susan (Dan Caffery) Battaglia, Anne (Jim) Mathers, Dr. Anthony (MacKenzie) Rotella, Dominick A. Battaglia, Jr., and Julianna Battaglia; 8 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marianna Battaglia; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A special thank you to physician and family friend, Dr. Louis Bonavita, the nursing staff at 2-5 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the staff at the Bishop Nursing Home, and of course those that made it possible for Mary to stay home: nieces, Frannie and Annette, and close family friend, Melissa.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 am on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Funeral Mass in celebration of Mary’s life at 9:30 am in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Liverpool. Entombment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, DeWitt. Family and friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s name may be made to Mary’s food pantry at Immaculate Heart of Mary, 425 Beechwood Ave. Liverpool, NY 13088 or St. Lucy’s Church food pantry, 425 Gifford St. Syracuse, NY 13204.
