Theresa M. (Nestico) Hluchyj's Obituary
Theresa M. (Nestico) Hluchyj, 101, of Liverpool, NY, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2023, with her loving family by her side. She was born in Sant‘Andrea, Calabria, Italy, daughter of Andrea and Maria Vittoria (Codispoti) Nestico.
As an eight-year-old immigrant, Theresa learned a new language and customs while growing up during The Great Depression near Buffalo, NY. She helped support her family as a “Rosie the Riveter” at Scott Aviation, where she checked the quality of air masks used by WWII pilots. She enjoyed ballroom dancing and cooking for others. At first hesitant, she later agreed to share family recipes via recordings online. Family favorites—spaghetti and meatballs, baked chicken, pierogies, pickled eggplant, babka and others—are preserved as a legacy of love. She never claimed to be perfect, but did the best she could in each moment. She dearly loved her family and friends, including her wonderful neighbors.
She is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Michael Hluchyj; brother, Bruno and sisters, Betty and Mary.
Theresa is survived by her daughters, Terry (Richard) and Michele (Doug) Drum; sons, Michael (Theresa) Hluchyj and John Hluchyj; two grandchildren, Jeffrey (Katie) and Kate (Matias); four great-grandchildren, Kristina, Santiago, Alexander and Sebastian; and many nephews, nieces and extended family members.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 5, 2023, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY, followed by a funeral service at 6:15 p.m. Theresa will be laid to rest on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, 8668 County Rte 57, Baldwinsville, NY.
