Therese M. DeFuria's Obituary
Therese M. DeFuria, née Sukatsch, age 98, passed peacefully on February 9, 2016, at her “home” at the Nottingham where she had lived since 2008. Therese was born in Logansport, Indiana and later living in Joliet and Chicago, Illinois, and Fayetteville, North Carolina, before finally moving to the Central New York area with her husband, the late Albert C. DeFuria, M.D. FACS following the completion of his residency and discharge from the service. Prior to starting her family, Therese was a Registered Nurse and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.
While in Syracuse, Therese was active with the St. Joseph’s Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, serving as its President and volunteering extensively in many of the Auxiliary’s programs for many years including as a Gift Shop Manager, Hospital and Blood Drive volunteer. Therese enjoyed not only her family, but had a love of reading, frequently passing on her prized selections to family members.
Therese lost the love of her life, Albert C. DeFuria, M.D., FACS after 54 years of marriage in 1997. Therese was also predeceased by her son, Albert E. DeFuria. Therese is survived by her son, Jay J. DeFuria, of Sacramento, California, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 am on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Funeral Mass in celebration of Therese’s life at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church. Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, DeWitt. A calling hour for family and friends will be held on Tuesday from 8:00 – 9:00 am at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Therese’s honor to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, New York.
