Thomas J. Greco's Obituary
Thomas J. Greco, “Lucy’s sweetie”, 94, of East Syracuse, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Crouse Hospital. He was born in Syracuse, the son of the late Thomas and Mary (Talarico) Greco. Tom was known as “Dynamite” at North High School where he was manager of the football team. Tom was a WWII Army Air Corps Disabled Veteran. He served in the China, Burma, India Campaign, and was on the South Pacific Island of Tinian when the Enola Gay left for its mission at Hiroshima to end the war with the Japanese. Tom worked for several years with the late Ronnie Philips on food concessions at the fairgrounds Coliseum and Archbold Stadium. Tom was a factory representative for 30 years for plumbing supply firms and retired from Fairfield Sales in 1985. After retirement he volunteered at the VA Medical Center and the Disabled Veterans Office. Tom and Ray Detor were instrumental in acquiring vans for transport of disabled veterans. He was also a volunteer fireman with Lyncourt Fire Department and Vice President on the Lyncourt School Board.
He was predeceased by his brothers, George, Carl and Joseph Greco.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Lucy (Tucci) Greco; his daughter, Lucille Sawenko; son-in-law, Victor Sawenko; his sister, Arlene Chiodo; step-granddaughter, Lisa Sawenko; step-grandson, Eric Sawenko; great-grandson, Noah Sawenko; his godchildren, Joe Greco, Sam Mezzo, Jacquelyn Frink and Jamsie Daino; several nieces, nephews and many lifelong friends.
A calling hour for family and friends will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2015 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm followed by a funeral service officiated by Tom’s nephew, Fr. James Cesta in celebration of Tom’s life at 1:00 pm at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse. Following funeral services, please join the Greco family at Orchard Vali Golf Club, 4693 Cherry Valley Turnpike, Lafayette, NY 13084. Private entombment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, Dewitt.
