William Earle Metzler's Obituary
William Earle Metzler passed away unexpectedly on October 26, 2017 in Liverpool, NY. Bill was born in Syracuse, NY to Robert M. and Shirley A. Metzler on September 5, 1954. He graduated from East Syracuse-Minoa High School in 1972 where he developed a love for soccer. In Bill’s later years his love for soccer and coaching teens lead him to Rome Free Academy where he assisted the coaching staff for many years.
Bill served in U.S. Air Force attached to the 27th Supply Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico and served a total of 33 years with both the 108th and 174th Air National Guard groups in Syracuse. During Desert Storm, Bill served a year in Saudi Arabia with his Guard unit. After retiring from the Guard as Master Sergeant, he worked for the Raymond Corp. for a number of years.
Bill was predeceased by his father, Robert M. Metzler.
He is survived by his mother, Shirley Metzler Griffith and stepfather, Daniel W. Griffith of Florida; brothers, Robert D. Metzler of Liverpool and John D. (Brenda) Metzler of Liverpool; sisters, Valerie A. Metzler and Susan E. (Jerald) Hole, both of Baldwinsville. Bill is also survived by stepmother, Carol H. Metzler, Skaneateles; stepbrother, David A. (Ann) Griffith, Plano, TX; and stepsister, Katherine M. Griffith, Auburn, NY, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Bill will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017 from 4:00 – 6:30 pm, immediately followed by a funeral service in celebration of Bill’s life at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY. Private burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
