Can’t believe it has been so many years since Bill passed away. I still remember his voice on Classical FM each morning. He had a very soothing voice and I looked forward to hearing that. I remember calling to make a pledge to Classical FM and I think Maureen took my call. When asked what I liked, I I recalled that when I woke up and heard his voice, I was reassured that “ all was well “. I also remember he always played “ Islandic Folk song every Saturday at 6:30 AM . They continued to play it for years but I miss it now. I fondly remember his voice.

I am sorry to say, I only just learned of Bill’s passing. I can’t believe it’s been 3 ½ years. As a former colleague (at WWFM Trenton-Princeton), I googled Bill several times over the years to see what he was up to and if he was still in Syracuse. But time has a way of slipping by. I felt a special bond with Bill going to back to his WFLN days, when I was but a listener. I always connected with his enthusiasm for Ralph Vaughan Williams, and called him occasionally during his shifts to chat briefly and to thank him for his work. By the time WFLN folded, I had been working at WWFM for a few years, so when I heard Bill had applied for an air shift, I put in a good word. I was honored to be able to work with him. His was one of the most genial personalities in classical radio.

I shared the sad news on Facebook this morning. You might be interested in some of the reader responses. Bill was very clearly loved and appreciated by those in the PA/NJ area who remember listening to him on both WFLN and WWFM.

I knew Bill only for the time that we were colleagues at Classic FM, but I feel as though I knew him a lot longer. That’s because Bill had a gift: the ability to connect readily with people, both in person and over the air. I was taught that when you’re on the radio, you’re talking not to thousands of people, but to just ONE person, who is sitting across the table from you. With his affable manner and understated wit, Bill practiced this art to perfection. His knowledge was extensive of course, but he never flaunted it; it came through naturally as he shared his love of music with his audience… his friends. One can only imagine how many listeners he gently introduced to great music over his hours and years at WCNY, guiding them to an appreciation that will last a lifetime. Some of the posts here attest to that.

I have no doubt that by now Bill has shared a hearty handshake a few good stories with his beloved RVW, as well as Elgar, Bliss, Tippett, et al… perhaps even Henry Purcell. Godspeed, Bill… and thank you.

Please let me send my condolences on the loss of Bill. I always enjoyed being in his company and appreciated his inquisitive mind, intellect, and love of music and the arts. Will and I grew up together in PA. At age 12 he was already sharing his musical and broadcasting talents with the world; We did a radio broadcast every day to a captive cafeteria audience during lunch at school. One of my many happy and lasting memories of him was opening the just released Beatles record - Sergeant Pepper - together one June day, and playing it over and over again at his parent’s house. By the next week he could drum the whole album. We shared many formative experiences, and I will miss him. Go with God, Bill.

For many years I woke up to Bill's morning classical music on WCNY radio. I never met him, but so enjoyed his programming and his comments on the various pieces. I've missed him since he has been off the air and I'm sorry to hear about his passing. My condolences to his family and his "lovely wife Maureen."

For many years, Bill Shedden was my morning alarm clock. I loved his musical selections, his
commentary, his deep knowledge of music, his sense of humour, and his always cheery personality. And Saturday afternoon post opera was not to be missed, as he chatted with Maureen and offered yet more musical insight, this time into the opera repertoire and singers. I and many others in Ontario have missed him, and both programs. Maureen, I am so sorry for your loss of such a delightful husband, colleague and friend. - Mary Davis Little
