Yi Ja Kim Hoyt's Obituary
Our beloved Yi Ja “Kim” Hoyt, of Central Square, N.Y. passed away Saturday, June 12, 2021 at the age of 76. Yi Ja was born in Kwang Ju, South Korea to parents Mi Jung Kim and Mal Sun Pak Kim. She was predeceased by them and her brother- Mi Jung Kim, sister- Kyung Ja Kim, son in law- Navid Garshasb, and granddaughter- Alexandra Miller.
She met the love of her life, Carl Hoyt, Sr. while he was serving in the U. S. Army in Korea. They married there, in 1965 and began their family with their first daughter, Joan Lee (Hoyt) Garshasb. They returned to the U.S. and continued to grow their family with their son, Carl Hoyt, Jr. and daughter, Marie (Hoyt) Miller. Carl and Kim celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this year.
As a young Army Serviceman’s bride, then, Syracuse Police Academy graduate, Carl R. Hoyt, began his career with Kim as a Korean interpreter. Mrs. Hoyt also began her own career as an independent local business owner in Brewerton, NY with Kim’s Home for adults. She was the administrator/owner caring for veterans for over 40 years. She was known for her Korean cooking, especially her “home rice”, Bulgogi & Kimchi. Kim’s Korean Food was a favorite at the New York State Fair. Mrs. Hoyt’s leadership and guidance extended to the local Korean community/association as past President and Treasurer. Mrs. Hoyt also enjoyed gardening, helping others, and rescuing animals. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, United Methodist Church of West Monroe and Korean Church of Syracuse.
Kim is survived by her husband, Carl Hoyt, Sr.; her children, Joan (Navid) Garshasb, Carl Jr., and Marie (Tim) Miller; her grandchildren, Shawn, Andrew, and Sami; her brother, Yi Jung (Jung Rye) Kim and Joung Hyun and Hyun Kim, and several in laws, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Friday, June 18, 2021 from 5pm- 7pm at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY. A funeral service in celebration of her life will be held Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 10am at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, proceeding then to Union Settlement Cemetery, West Monroe, NY.
