Alfred Butler's Obituary
Alfred Butler, 95, of Syracuse, passed away Monday at the VA Medical Center. He was born in Lyons, NY, the son of the late Frank and Josephine (DiBiaso) Butler. Al was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran serving with the 299th Battalion. He worked for Byrne Dairy delivering milk from a horse drawn wagon. Al was co-owner with his brother Bill of Butler's Market for 31 years, retiring in 1980. He was a Pin Setter at the age of 14 at Solvay Lanes and joined the Greater Syracuse Bowling League in 1937. His first ABC was in 1940. Al bowled a 300 game in 1971. He took the teams of bowlers as their squad sponsor to the Peterson Bowling Classic in Chicago for 30 years. In 2002, "The Al Butler" sportsman award was instituted, the award goes to a league member who exemplifies the character and sportsmanship for which Al was known. In 2005, he was inducted into the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame which was a very proud moment for Al. He also owned and trained Harness Horses for many years and was a member of the Onondaga Horseman Association.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years, Rose (Guido) Butler in 2009; his brothers, Edward and William Butler and sisters, Marie Caiello and Genevieve Phillips. Al is survived by his two daughters, Suzanne (Richard) Meyers of North Syracuse and Nancy (Samuel) Bianchi of Lakeland; his son, Alfred (Noel) Butler of Lakeland; 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Betty (Rayo) Butler along with many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:00 am in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME and 11:00 am in St. Joseph the Worker Church, where a mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in the Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
