Carmela Grazia (Imbesi) Zanghi's Obituary
Carmela Grazia (Imbesi) Zanghi, 82, of Liverpool, NY, passed away Friday, May 12, 2017 in Tampa, Florida. She was born in Rodi, Sicily, Italy, daughter of Fortunato and Domenica (Belardo) Imbesi. Carmela was a meticulous seamstress known throughout the Syracuse area for the quality of her creations as extensive as clothes, curtains, drapes, slipcovers, suits and bridal party dresses. She arrived from Sicily in 1955 and started her career alongside her mother at the Julius Resnick Pocket Book Factory on the North Side of Syracuse while taking English classes at night. Although short in stature, she set a high standard in everything she touched whether it was sewing, cooking, baking, gardening or caring for her husband and three boys. She was happiest when her grandchildren would ask “Nonni” to make cookies.
Carmela is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Filippo Zanghi; three admiring sons, Joseph (Catherine) Zanghi, Fortunato (Maria) Zanghi, and Philip (Dawn) Zanghi; five adoring grandchildren, Ryan Ablard, Monica, Jacob, Alessandro, and Marco Zanghi; her siblings, Natale Imbesi (Rosetta) and Tino Imbesi (Phyllis); 14 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Joseph Imbesi (surviving Denise) and Josephine Riccardi (surviving Rich).
A Funeral Mass in celebration of Carmela’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 20, 2017 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Liverpool. Entombment will follow in Assumption Cemetery Family Mausoleum. Family and friends may call from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, May 19, 2017 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
Special thanks to Arbor Terrace at Citrus Park for their loving care of Carmela for the last six months, and Hospice for making her comfortable during her final days.
