Good afternoon:
My name is Pete Liddell…and I had the privilege of being Danny’s college baseball coach. He was a great high school athlete coming out of Carthage…and fortunately for our program people told him he wasn’t quite big enough or not quite fast enough to play big time college ball…and we were very excited for him to become a part of our program. He came to Cazenovia College with high school teammate Shawn Prievo…and they both enticed another Carthage classmate Marc Covey to transfer. Those three helped form a nucleus of a competitive program.
Dan was always fortunate to have great support. That normally starts with family…and Dan has a great one. His parents, sister and brother were a fixture at our games… and have always been there for him. His brother mentioned to me yesterday that about ¾ of his college teammates showed to give their respects yesterday…which is not a surprise to me. He was a popular teammate and friend to many.
When I heard about Dan’s situation…I called the home and spoke to him. I tried not to cry…but we both did. I came to visit Dan four Fridays ago to see him for what I guessed would be the last time. He was proud to be an Onondaga County Sherriff and I was quite impressed to see the unconditional support he had from his brothers in that department. It was easy to see where to go when I visited him…no less than 20 patrol cars, the one they signed and parked out front, and at least a dozen officers stopped by to see him in the hour I was there.
Most importantly Dan’s own family he had created…his wife Stephanie…Stephanie he was always an over-achiever but he really did so but convincing you to be his wife. I know that he very much cherished you and was so proud of his daughter Meeyah. I told you yesterday I will be calling you out of the blue someday to take you and your daughter to lunch and will have some things for you and her as to help her remember who her Dad was.
I always tell people that I don’t judge how good a player is based on stats or how good a player they were on the field. Dan was a great player…but more importantly he was a great person, husband, father and professional and will always be remembered for his spirit, good nature, competitiveness and willingness to help others.
I will miss you…God bless you. ~Coach
