I met Dennis through our shared work at the Hilton Doubletree in Syracuse—a part-time gig for us both. I knew him for such a short time but I was struck by his kindness, his openness, his gentleness and warmth. The last time I saw him wasn’t at work but driving through Elbridge, where I caught sight of him shepherding schoolchildren safely across the street. A hearty smile and a wave and then I drove on, not realizing it would be the last time. You are missed, Dennis. My sincere condolences to your wife Dawn and daughter Ella and all who knew and loved you.
My deepest condolences to Dennis’ family. Each and every one of my children spanning every single school building at Jordan-Elbridge including my child not yet in school knew and adored Mr. B, and he greeted all of them by name with a high five every time we saw him. I’m quite convinced that he knew every kid in the district by name and had developed a rapport with all of them. His passion for his work, and kindness showed through in every interaction, and he will be missed by the entire community.
I last spoke to Dennis at a JE soccer game this school year. We were discussing current trends with youth related to behavior and trauma in school. I remember him taking a pause to say, "They just need someone to listen and understand them." That is the single most powerful concept I took from that conversation. I've tried my hardest to practice that every day since then.
I cannot begin to articulate how powerful his presence and words were in life.
