Elvera R. Young's Obituary
Elvera Rose (Prietti) Young, 65, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 20, 2016. A lifelong resident, she recently completed a 29-year career as a teacher. Through her work, she shaped hundreds of lives for the better. She was cherished by all who knew her—family, friends and even those who briefly came into her life as her struggle with melanoma came to a close. As one of her nurses put it, "She's one that sticks with you."
Her death, while too soon and tragic, can never take away the incomparable life she led. Elvera's spark lit up a room. Her energy was contagious. You couldn't help but love and be loved by Elvie. She lived for what makes life worth living: a loud and loving family, amazingly devoted friends, delicious food, a beautiful beach and, of course, MacKenzie-Childs. Elvie was the life of the party and consummate hostess, making others feel joy by sharing her homemade meals, smile and laughter. Her family was the center of her life, and she the center of theirs. No woman was ever a better daughter, sister, wife, mother or friend than Elvie. Her loss is palpable, but her incredible strength and spirit lives on in all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Elvera was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth (Rinaldi) and Daniel Prietti, Sr., and her son, Joel P. Young. She is survived by her husband and love of her life, Kevin G. Young; five children and two daughters-in-law, Kevin Young Jr., Kyle P. (Stacey) Young, Conor J. (Cortney) Young, Tara T. Young and Tyler “Jack” G. Young; two beautiful granddaughters, Lily C. Young and Emma R. Young; three siblings, Daniel A. Prietti Jr., Bette Ann Prietti and Gigi P. (Matt) Sgroi; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Funeral Mass will be held in celebration of Elvera’s life on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Church, Syracuse. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 PM on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at St. Patrick's Church, 216 North Lowell Ave.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation (www.melanoma.org) and Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
