I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Pallone family on Floyd's passing - especially to his son Steven with whom I attended elementary and middle school. While I did not really know Mr. Pallone well, there was one moment that has always stuck in my mind which embodies just what a kind and thoughtful man Floyd was.
I was enrolled in Boy Scout's as a young boy and one of the organization's premiere events was the annual Pinewood Derby wooden car races. I was not particularly handy as a kid and my father was often away during the week working in Albany. One year, I did not have a car ready to enter in the upcoming derby due to my inept woodworking skills and an absent father who couldn't offer assistance. Somehow, Mr. Pallone learned of my plight - probably through Steven - and one night he invited me over to his house on Park Street to hang out with Steven while he whittled away in his basement creating and molding a wooden car for me to use in the upcoming race. I can't tell you what a wonderful feeling it was as an awkward youth to know I was not excluded from the derby and made part of the event. That one simple act of kindness has always been seared in my memory and may be the only real interaction I ever had with Floyd, but in meant more to me than he could have ever known
