I am a little late reading my newspapers so I just read Mr. Carbone's obituary. I grew up in Gouverneur and a highlight of my younger life was being taken to the Carbone shoe store by my mother to buy new shoes. In those days, we went before school started, and again in the spring, and we only had a few pairs at a time. I remember that I always thought that the shoes there were beautiful, and that I was always treated as if I was an important person, even though I was just a kid. Both Donnie and Marco were so attentive and friendly, but in a formal way, if that makes any sense. They were professionals and they cared about what their customers.
I remember my mother letting me buy a particularly beautiful pair of purple suede lace up pumps one year, even though they were not very practical. I loved those shoes. I think about Donnie and Marco, literally, every time I shop for shoes (Which is alot more often these days), and I have missed them, and their store, ever since they closed up and left Gouverneur. May they both rest in peace. True gentlemen. My condolences to their families.
