Gaetano "Donnie" Carbone's Obituary
Gaetano “Donnie” Carbone, 86, of Minoa, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was born on October 8, 1928 in Gouverneur, NY. He was the owner and proprietor of Carbone Shoe Store in Gouverneur and Carbone/Milia Shoe Store in Potsdam, NY. In high school he was an outstanding athlete. In football he was named All Northern Conference running back and in track he was a member of the 4 x 200 relay team which held a Section 10 Athletics record from 1946-1971.
After serving two years in the Army, Donnie returned to Gouverneur to continue in the family shoe business with his brother Marco. In 1976, he moved to Syracuse where he worked at the following shoe stores; McKays (Shoppingtown), Ceo and Rutz (Fairmont Fair) and Rochester Shoe Store (Western Lights) until his retirement.
Donnie was an avid sports fan watching Syracuse University basketball games, NY Yankees games and horse racing. He looked forward to his annual trip to Saratoga Racetrack with family and friends.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Maria; sister, Rosie Rositano; brother, Marco Carbone and his parents, Alessandro and Anunziata (Canale) Carbone.
Donnie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rina (Tropepi); daughter, Nancy (Arthur Colamarino); sons, Alex of Nevada, Frank of Arizona, Mario (Bridget Sunser) of Syracuse and Rocco of Syracuse; grandsons, Michael Colamarino, CJ and Jake Carbone, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 am on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Gaetano’s life at 10:30 am in St. Matthew’s Church, East Syracuse. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends may call from 3:00 – 8:00 pm on Friday, September 4, 2015 at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
