George A. Retzos' Obituary
George A. Retzos, 94, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. George was born in Proti, Greece, the son of the late Angelo and Angelina (Themelis) Retzos. He emigrated in 1948 to the United States and immediately started working at Columbus Baking Company before becoming the sole proprietor in 1974. George went on to own and operate Columbus Bakery for 53 years, retiring in 2002. George had a tremendous sense of humor and had a genuine love for people. He was an avid horse racing fan, owning 23 horses at one time. George enjoyed Vernon Downs, soccer, animals, and had a very big heart. He was known for his generosity, and loved taking care of his family, especially his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. George was also a life-long communicant of St. Sophia’s Church.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Joy P. (Kambas) Retzos; his sons-in-law, Bernard Messer and Patrick Witt.
George is survived by his 3 children, Alicia Messer, Christine Retzos-Witt, and James Retzos; 2 grandchildren, Nicole (Craig) Rheaume and James (Shannon) Retzos, Jr.; 6 great-grandchildren, Aiden, Weston, Kaylen, Nicko, Christian, and Sophia; several cousins and his dog Rufus.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, followed by burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERNAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (Corner of Buckley).
Memorial contributions can be made in George’s name to St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church, 325 Waring Road, Syracuse, NY 13224.
