Joan M. E. Sacco's Obituary
Joan M. E. Sacco, 100, passed away Friday, January 31, 2020 at Elderwood Nursing Home. Joan was born on October 25, 1919 to the late Charles and Hetty Barrett in Southampton, England. She was a graduate of Clark’s College in Southampton and was a war time member of the British Royal Air Force, Group 10, stationed at Rudloe Manor in Wiltshire. Joan was a plotter in the operations room and directed RAF aircraft. She met her husband, Francis Sacco, who was serving in the U.S. Army at a dance in Bath, England during WWII. They were married in 1944 in Southampton. Joan moved to Syracuse after the war and became a U.S. citizen.
She was employed at Syracuse University as an administrative assistant to the vice-chancellor and retired after 30 years with the university, it was there that she met her long-time friend, Loretta Nowicki.
Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her husband, Francis, in 1997.
Joan is survived by a son, Michael (Sandy Daly) of Pulaski, NY; a daughter, Pamela (John) Latocha of Lancaster, PA; granddaughters, Nicole (Scott) Brennan and Kristen (Daniel) Chin, both of Lancaster, PA; 4 great-grandchildren; godchild and niece, Diane Morris; sister-in-law, MaryJane Pizzuto, along with several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Brenda D’Addario for her many years of care and concern for Joan.
A calling hour will take place on Monday, February 3, 2020 from 12:00 – 1:00 P.M. at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME 3401 Vickery Rd. (Corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY immediately followed by a funeral service in celebration of Joan’s life at 1:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse.
