Joseph P. Gatto's Obituary
Joseph P. Gatto, 88, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 29, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Syracuse, son of the late Anthony and Rose (Drosi) Gatto. Joseph served in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran. He was employed with the City of Syracuse for 25 years before retiring in 1992 as Director of Code Enforcement. Joseph was a former 10th Ward Democratic Chairman serving under former Mayor Lee Alexander. He loved spending time with his family and drinking his homemade wine.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife, Waneta J. (Wolff) Gatto in 2011; brothers, Salvatore “Sam”, Frank and Mario Gatto, and his sister, Martha Berube.
Joseph is survived by his daughter, Laura (Chris) Michalowski of Clay; his son, Brian S. (Mary) Cullen of Baldwinsville; three grandchildren, Kevin, Matthew and Nicholas; his sister, Mary Gatto; several nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.
A Funeral Service in celebration of Joseph’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 1, 2018 at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
