Joseph T. "Joe" Stagnitta's Obituary
Joseph “Joe” Stagnitta, 97, formerly of 907 North Townsend Street passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. Joe was born to Francisco and Egidia Stagnitta in Linguaglossa, Sicily on January 24, 1921. He immigrated to the United States in 1926 at the age of 5. Joe was a graduate of North High School. He was an amazing Musician and could play any instrument, but his favorite was the Bass Fiddle. He owned the Stagnitta Music Company on North Salina Street and taught numerous students throughout his career. He continued to teach music lessons until the age of 95! He had a Marching Band that played at many parades in the Syracuse area. He was recognized at many Award Ceremonies for his talent. Joe was an active member of the Professional Musicians of CNY. In 2012 he was featured in the Northside Heroes Project and was a proud resident of the Syracuse Northside.
Joe served in the US Army during WWII in the 379 Coalition, 54th 2nd Corps, Medics where he served in Africa, Sicily and Italy in the Fifth Army under General George Patton.
Joe was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Josephine Filipkowski; his brother and sister-in-law, Alexander and Barbara Stagnitta; brother-in-law, Nicholas Morina and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Joe is survived by his sister, Mary Stagnitta Morina; 13 nieces and nephews, Nicki (Ed) Richards, goddaughter, Gilda (Stu) Syverson, Anthony (Sally) Morina, Walter (Julie) Filipkowski, Sharon (Michael) Crosby, Francine (Jim) Levato), Ann Marie Trinca, Teresa (Jim) De Witt, Sandi Kuper, Gerard (Lisa) Morina, godson, Frank (Kim) Stagnitta, Jo Anne (Tim) Doran and Bridget (Mike) Meyer, 27 great-nieces and nephews and 10 great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins and goddaughter, Shani Marie Stagnitta.
Family and friends may call from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, 301 Ash St., Syracuse. A Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Joe’s life will follow at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Pompei/St, Peter Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery.
The Family would like to thank the Staff at the Fahey Rehabilitation Center, 4th Floor, for their loving care and kindness towards UNCLE JOE during his time there and to the Tower D, 5th floor Cardiac at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their care and compassion.
Donations may be made to the Dominican Monastery where Joe had attended daily mass at 805 Court St., Syracuse, NY 13208.
