Judy Ann (Hughes) Tassone's Obituary
Judy Ann Tassone, 73, of Liverpool, NY, passed away on April 9, 2025, following a serious medical event earlier this year, marked by both hopeful progress and heartbreaking setbacks. Born in Syracuse on February 11, 1952, to Francis T. Hughes and Dorothy Jane (Britschge) Hughes, Judy was a devoted public servant, beloved family matriarch, and cherished friend to many.
After graduating from St. John the Baptist (Class of 1970), Judy enjoyed a long career at Niagara Mohawk (later National Grid), retiring after years of dedicated service. Deeply committed to public service, Judy proudly served six terms as an Onondaga County Legislator, representing the 4th District from 2010 to 2021. She chaired the Legislature's Facility Committee from 2012 to 2019 and was known for her thoughtful leadership, compassionate approach, and dedication to helping others. Judy's husband, Bill Tassone, was a continuous source of inspiration and support throughout her political career. Following Bill's passing in 2023, she continued serving her community as a Town of Salina Zoning Board of Appeals member. She also volunteered during elections, helping transport people to the polls—a small act of service that reflected her larger commitment to civic engagement.
Judy's life was marked by a quiet boldness and confidence that made her both deeply admired and deeply loved. While she shared many experiences and traditions with her large, close-knit family, she also carved her own independent path. She had a sharp mind and a distinctive sense of style that stood out—even as the mom and grandmother of all boys. Judy moved through life with grounded wisdom and vibrant energy, a rare blend of thoughtfulness, practicality, and spirited joy. An unmistakable flair marked her presence for living fully and intentionally—always true to herself and deeply connected to the people she loved.
She was a devoted wife, the loving mother of three sons, and the adoring grandmother of eight grandsons—each of whom brought tremendous joy to her life. Some of Judy's most treasured memories were made on Wellesley Island near Alexandria Bay, where she spent countless joyful seasons with her beloved husband, Bill, her sons, stepdaughters, grandchildren, and extended family. She embraced every moment—boating on the St. Lawrence River, riding wave runners, or taking her grandsons on golf cart rides to explore the island. Evenings were often spent playing cards, sharing long porch conversations over a glass (or two) of wine, and laughing with the people she loved most. She also enjoyed playing golf, both on the island and at home.
Judy found joy in tradition, especially celebrating St. Patrick's Day with her siblings—a highlight of every year. She also loved walking and hiking the trails around Green Lakes and Alexandria Bay with her sisters, savoring the natural beauty and the time together. A lifelong Roman Catholic, Judy remained close to classmates from St. John the Baptist and truly valued the friendships she built there, staying in touch over dinners and phone calls that spanned decades.
Judy's earlier years were filled with joy and community on Larkspur Drive in Baldwinsville, where she raised her sons and hosted many Friday night gatherings with friends and neighbors. During that time, she and her family also spent summers in Cape Cod with her siblings, nieces, and nephews—creating lasting memories filled with beach days, shared meals, and laughter. In recent years, she and her siblings enjoyed casual get-togethers at Sammy Malone's in Baldwinsville, where the conversation and connection flowed easily.
Judy was predeceased by her husband, Bill Tassone (2023); her son, Eric Brazell (1995); her mother, Dorothy (2000); and her father, Francis (1983).
She is survived by her sons Ben (Melissa) Brazell and their sons Ryan, Sam, and Luke; Chris (Karyn) Brazell and their sons Braeden, Jack, Timothy, Michael, and Grant; her twin sister Jean (John) Kupinski; her sisters Mary Gilligan, Betsy Hughes, and Kathy (Dave) Smith; and brothers Bill (Donna), John (Maria), and Ed (Melissa), along with dozens of nieces and nephews stretching across three generations.
Judy's legacy is one of love, loyalty, and deep connection. She will be remembered for her warmth, her courage, and the quiet poise with which she carried herself through life—and for the steady, loving presence she offered to those she held dear.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, from 3 to 6 p.m. at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Road (corner of Buckley Rd.) N. Syracuse, NY 13212. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 3494 Route 31, Baldwinsville, NY 13027, followed by a procession to Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Judy's memory.
