Jui Hsiang "Simon" Teng's Obituary
Jui Hsiang “Simon” Teng, 75, of Liverpool, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Crouse Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Simon was born right out of the gate with an adventurous spirit, and it led him to pursue a life of equal measure. He was born in Fuzhou, China and raised in Taipei, Taiwan by his father Peng Teng and Mother Zhi Wen Wei. When Simon came to the United States, he started his cooking career in Virginia and moved to New York City in 1978 with his wife Jenny.
His career took off in NYC and he was named New York’s Master Chef by Bon Appétit in 1985. He managed renowned restaurants Auntie Yuan, Uncle Tai, and David K’s in Manhattan. At the height of his career, he was driven by his vision to revolutionize and personalize what Chinese food in America could be by bringing the taste of a Chinese grandma’s home-cooking to the table alongside restaurant and traditional banquet style food.
Simon came to Syracuse in 1995. He opened China Road Restaurant in Mattydale to a welcoming community and served the area for over two decades. He was a visionary man who delighted in sharing his love of Chinese cuisine with everyone who walked through the doors.
He is survived by his wife Jenny, his son and spouse, Billy and Lily, his daughter, Crystal, and the many people who were touched by his life’s work.
Funeral services were private.
