Mary (Spensieri) Cupelo's Obituary
Mary Cupelo, 98, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at St. Camillus Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Syracuse to the late Carmine and Concetta (Monteleone) Spensieri. In the 1950’s, she worked for General Electric in the early days of Electronic’s Parkway, and later in her career worked for the state of New York, retiring after serving as Secretary to the Regional Director for the NYS Lottery. Mary loved to cook, bake, sew, and play piano. She really loved her trips to the casino. Most of all, Mary was content when she was with family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her loving husband, Bob in 2013 and her sister, Josephine Cupelo in 2021.
Mary is survived by her children, Kathleen (Victor) DiSerio and Dr. Robert (Barbara) Cupelo; she was affectionately known as “Meema” by her grandchildren, Michael DiSerio, Steven (Camilla) DiSerio, Laura (Casey) Nunneker, Dr. Emily (Dr. Michael) Daugherty, Andrew (Alicia) Cupelo, Courtney Cupelo, Caroline (Matthew) Plummer, and Matthew Cupelo; her great-grandchildren, William, Benjamin, John, Isabel, Jack, Grace, Maeve, Adrian, and Luke; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank all the nurses and aides at St. Camillus Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their special care and love in her last months.
A calling hour will take place on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 from 9:45 – 10:45 A.M. at Assumption Church, 812 N. Salina St. Syracuse, followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 A.M. in the church. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum.
