Mary M. Sgroi's Obituary
Mary M. Sgroi (O’Neill), 92, of Fuquay-Varina, NC (formerly Liverpool, NY), passed away peacefully on October 12, 2022. She was born in Watertown, NY and was the daughter of the late Herman and Sarah O’Neill. She was a graduate of Immaculate Heart Academy. After graduation, Mary moved to Syracuse and worked as a secretary. Shortly thereafter she met her husband of 63 years, John J. Sgroi, the love of her life who passed in 2020.
Prior to her retirement, Mary worked as a Teller at Key Bank for many years. She also taught church school at St. Andrews and participated as a volunteer for numerous things at her Church and in her community. Mary’s kindness, love, patience, and acceptance were her greatest qualities. She will be greatly missed by all her friends and family.
In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by two sisters, Charlotte Canaan and Sally Dugan.
Mary is survived by a son, Stephen (Jodie) of NC; a daughter, Karen (Michael Turberg) of KS; grandsons, Christian and Paul; granddaughter, Courtney; a sister, Theresa Sparacino (Joe) and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass in celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 4, 2022, at St. Lucy’s Church, 432 Gifford St., Syracuse. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4:00 - 6:00 pm on Thursday November 3, 2022, at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.), N. Syracuse, NY.
