His childhood was scattered among places including Trinidad, Florida, North Dakota and Schenectady, NY. Bright and academically gifted, he graduated from North Syracuse High School in 1954.

After a brief stint with Consolidated Freightways in Rochester, Ren joined State Farm Insurance in 1965 as an agent. Located primarily in Fayetteville, he remained with the company until his retirement in 2002.
An avid reader and book collector, Ren commanded a range of subjects, from history to economics to foreign affairs. Among his passions were aviation, art, film, music and theater. He also played tennis and spent countless hours beautifying his yard.
