Richard James Arena's Obituary
On September 25, 2023, Richard James Arena, 62, a lifelong resident on the Northside of Syracuse, passed away unexpectedly at home. Richard suffered for many years with multiple serious health issues. Despite his health issues, he lived independently, often helping family, friends, and neighbors.
Richard was a graduate of Anthony A. Henninger High School. He was once the owner of F&L Cleaning, later called Arena Cleaning Service. He also worked for Concession Air “CA1” at Syracuse Hancock International Airport and retired from the City of Syracuse as a Custodial Supervisor.
Richard was a devoted dog lover. He had many dogs that provided him with constant companionship and joy throughout the years.
He was a lifelong baseball fan since his little league days and a lifelong fan of the Cincinnati Reds.
Richard loved family gatherings with his many cousins and relatives. He enjoyed finding the family roots of his large Italian families, often passing on his knowledge to family members.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Lucy (Infanto) Arena and infant sister, Deborah Ann.
Richard is survived by his brother, Frank J. (Diane) Arena of College Station, Texas; his sister, Rosanne (Mark) Mastroeni of East Syracuse; 2 nieces, Allison (Seamus) Burke of College Station, Texas and Andrea Mastroeni of Liverpool, NY; 1 nephew, Dr. Matthew N. Mastroeni, PhD, of Ames, Iowa; 2 great-nephews, George and Gordon Burke, both from College Station, Texas, and many cousins, friends, and family.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY, followed by a funeral Mass in celebration of Richard’s life at 12:00 p.m. in Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, 301 Ash St., Syracuse, NY. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rescue Mission, American Heart Association, CNY SPCA, Humane Association, or a charity of one’s choice.
